Abstract

We construct a modulated one-dimensional photonic band gap structures (MPBGS) and investigate the soliton-like modes induced by the nonlinear effect. It is found that due to the nonlinear modulation, the common linear gap of the MPBGS can become narrow or completely disappear, the electromagnetic eigenmodes can enter the common linear gap and develop into soliton-like modes. The field distributions for linear and soliton-like modes are also computed and discussed.
