Abstract

ALTHOUGH multiple air cysts of the peritoneum (pneumatosis intestinales, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis) have been frequently described in the literature, a careful search has failed to reveal an account of a large solitary airfilled cyst in this location, although Brown,1in 1936, reported an air cyst of the abdomen and left thigh, probably formed within the fascia of the psoas muscle. The first case report of multiple gas cysts of the intestine in the human, was described by Bang2in 1876. Finney,3in 1908, wrote of his first American occurrence, although the condition was known in domestic hogs since 1825. Numerous others were reported until in 1925, Thoma and Hennigar4mentioned 57 such cases.
