Abstract

During the solid state polymerization (SSP) of poly(bisphenol A carbonate), both the forward reaction rate constant and the phenol diffusion coefficient inside the polymer particle were significantly higher when SSP was carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) compared to in atmospheric N 2 . These enhancements depended on the reaction conditions, and can be understood in terms of the CO 2 concentrations in the polymer. Polymer with a M w as high as 78100 has been synthesized by SSP with scCO 2 as the sweep fluid.
