Abstract

Solid waste management approaches through conventional methods create many environmental problems; therefore attention is needed for critical analysis of various sustainable waste management models. Various approaches and models have been developed to mitigate the organic waste; a sophisticated mixed-integer linear programming model used in the long-term planning of solid waste management activities and a decision support system designed to promote integrated programs for recycling, treatment, incinerations and disposal. Life cycle assessment models used various criteria to evaluate the functional unit, system boundaries, waste composition and energy modeling. A waste management model is sustainable when it addresses environmental, economic and social facets. Mathematical modeling plays an important role in waste management, primarily in solid waste management systems. One such approach is scenario-based fuzzy-stochastic quadratic programming (SFQP). This chapter mainly focuses on various aspects of an effective solid waste management model for a sustainable environment.
