Abstract

Recent efforts in the development of stretchable and wearable energy storage devices including lithium ion batteries, have been strongly motivated by tantalizing applications such as smart garments, wearable communication, flexible display devices, and medical implants. This study focuses on the development and characterization of a stretchable fabric-based lithium ion battery composed of fabric-based electrodes and a solid polyethylene oxide (PEO) based electrolyte. Specifically, several stretchable fabrics were considered including cotton and silver based fabrics. Mechanical and electrochemical performances of the fabric-based battery are characterized, and furthermore, the materials and fabrication processes are optimized.
