Abstract

XRD, FT/IR and XPS studies of MoO 3/anatase and MoO 3-rutile systems showed that on heating MoO 3 spontaneously spreads under the influence of surface-free energy over both anatase and rutile, manifesting the phenomenon of solid/solid “wetting”. On anatase, where a crystallographic fit exists with MoO 3, an epitaxial layer is formed, exposing mainly the (010) plane with the Mo= O bonds strengthened in comparison to bulk MoO 3. In case of rutile MoO 3 platelets grow perpendicularly to the surface of rutile, exposing mainly the ( h00) and ( hk0) planes.
