Abstract
A two-dimensional system of hard dumb-bells, which consist of two (fused) hard discs of diameter σ with centres distanced by D= dσ, is studied for 0⩽ d⩽1. A heuristic analysis and free volume approximation indicate the existence of four phases in the system: (1) fluid, (2) plastic crystal (stable only at small d), (3) crystal, and (4) disordered crystal (stable only at d close to one). The last phase being a non-periodic solid with certain positional and orientational order, is also expected to exist for other molecular shapes in two and three dimensions.
