Abstract

Solid particle erosion (SPE) has been recognised as a serious problem in thermal power plants. The fly ash particles entrained from the flue gases of boiler furnace in coal fired power station, collides with boiler steel component and causes extensive surface erosion. This work is focused on developing the high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) sprayed composite coatings on a boiler steel namely SA210 Grade A1 and thereafter studying the SPE behaviour of the coatings. The combination of Ni alloy with chromium carbide was HVOF sprayed on the selected boiler steel. The study was conducted using an air jet erosion test rig at a velocity of 40 m s−1 and impingement angle of 30 and 90° on uncoated as well as coated boiler tube steel (GrA1) at room temperature. All samples in as sprayed as well as eroded conditions were analysed in detail by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses.
