Abstract

Melting temperatures have been measured and (solid + liquid) phase diagrams constructed for acetonitrile + tetrachloromethane, +trichloromethane, +trichlorofluoromethane, and + 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane. All are simple eutetic systems with solid-phase transitions. The results are compared with the phase diagrams predicted from ideal-mixture behavior. All except “x CH 3CN + (1 − x) CHCl 3’ show large positive deviations from ideality. We have measured the enthalpy of fusion of 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane with a Hart d.s.c. obtaining a value of (4.11 ± 0.05)kJ · mol −1. The enthalpy of fusion shows that 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane forms a plastic crystal before melting. The melting temperature is (287.52±0.05) K and a transition to the plastic crystal occurs at (148±2) K.
