Abstract
(Solid + liquid) phaZe diagrams have been constructed for “tetrachloromethane + each of the three cyclic compounds (which are very similar in size and shape) cyclopentanone (C 5H 8O), 4-butyrolactone (C 4H 6O 2), and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (C 5H 9NO)’. Solid addition compounds form with the empirical formulae: C 5H 8O·CCl 4, (C 4H 6O 2) 2·CCl 4, C 5H 9NO·CCl 4, and (C 5H 9NO) 2·CCl 4. All are congruently melting except the last which melts incongruently. Its composition is not certain. Compound formation is attributed to a charge-transfer interaction with the tetrachloromethane acting as electron acceptor and the nitrogen or oxygen in the second component acting as electron donor.
