Abstract

Acrylic latexes have been used successfully for over 30 years modifying cement mortar properties both for indoor and outdoor applications. Polymers containing 100% acrylic compositions in re-dispersible powder form can now be produced by spray drying of appropriate acrylic latexes. When re-dispersed in water, these acrylic dry polymers exhibited the same particle size characteristics as their parent latexes. Moreover, just like the acrylic latexes, the re-dispersible acrylic powders are well suited for improving cement mortar properties in a number of areas such as patching and repair mortars, spray coating, stucco, ceramic tile adhesives, building adhesives, shotcrete, etc. Compositional change can result in a re-dispersible acrylic powder with greater flexibility and better water resistance. A long term exposure study has demonstrated outstanding exterior durability of acrylic powder modified mortars.
