Abstract

Solid distribution was investigated in slurries stirred by multiple axial impellers in continuous flow equipment. The solid concentration profiles are described by means of the one-dimensional sedimentation-dispersion model. The influence of various parameters is studied theoretically, namely: the Peclet number, the ratio of solid concentration upstream and downstream the exit nozzle, the ratio between the particle settling velocity in the stirred and in a still liquid. The possibility of prevision of the model is then tested by comparing the theoretical concentration profiles — calculated on the basis of independent measurements of the parameters — with selected experiments carried out with slurries of mono-sized spherical particles of different materials and size in water.
