Abstract
An analogy between the calculation of the total solid angle subtended by an aperture at a point or extended source and the calculation of certain electrostatic forces and energies is discussed. It is shown that such solid angle calculations reduce to the evaluation of the electrostatic energies of uniformly charged surfaces. A collection of formulae for the calculation of the electrostatic energy of uniformly charged surfaces for a range of different shapes is given. The general method is illustrated by considering the solid angle subtended by circular and rectangular apertures at point, surface and volume sources. In the case of rectangular apertures and for a range of source distributions, the value of the solid angle may be expressed analytically in closed form.
