Abstract

A solar fine tracking system has been designed and simulated for the pointing of a hard X-ray experiment (pinhole/occulter facility) to be flown on the Space Shuttle or a high altitude balloon. The system hardware consists of a uniform-diameter pinhole camera, photodetector, and sample/hold and analog-to-digital converting circuits. The high-precision algorithm is based on the numerically derived intensity distribution of the solar image. Simulation results show that the algorithm can estimate the absolute planar pointing angle to the Sun with the resolution of +or-0.001 arc seconds. >
