Abstract
Mysterious phenomena within the sun break through the surface with an intensity that rises and falls on an average 11-yr cycle. The surface goes from relative quiescence to extraordinary turbulence. And this brief report, reprinted by permission from the Science section of the 18 Dec. 1989 edition of The Washington Post, discusses the current sunspot cycle which may become the most violent ever.
