Abstract

Solar energy potential of India is assessed using Random Forest (RF) Machine Learning(ML) algorithm. Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) software is used for the prediction of Global Solar Radiation (GSR) of 29 states of India. The input parameters are maximum and minimum temperature, month numbers, latitude and longitude. The RF machine learning model is trained using experimental data of India Meteorological Department, Pune. RF model is used to develop the solar map of India. The predicted GSR varies between 13 and 21 MJ/m2/day indicating good solar potential in India for solar energy applications. Our results show that RF model is more accurate than conventional temperature solar radiation models. Hence, RF Model developed using WEKA can be used to estimate solar potential of any location worldwide.
