Abstract

A U.S. solar company and the electric utility in Chicago will offer rebates of US$1,250 per kilowatt for solar PV installations. Spire Solar Chicago and Commonwealth Edison will offer the rebate to promote the installation of locally-manufactured solar electric systems in the city. The ‘Photovoltaic Incentive Program’ will provide a rebate of $1,250 per kW for the balance of this year and $1,000 per kilowatt in 2004, for individuals and organizations who purchase PV systems or panels from Spire Solar Chicago with a direct current nameplate capacity of up to 50 kW. The programme complements other state financial incentives that are available through the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity ‘Renewable Energy Resources Program’ and the ‘Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.’ For PV systems larger than 2 kW, the DCEO program offers grants of $6,000 per kW while ICECF offers grants of $2,000 per kW to non-profit groups. Corporate tax incentives such as the Federal Business Energy Tax Credit and Accelerated Depreciation are also available to further reduce total system costs. This is a short news story only.
