Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses various solar prospects for the United Kingdom and the EEC. Europe has a wide range of climates and detailed analysis is needed of the typical patterns of solar energy supply and of energy demand in different areas before the true economic opportunities can be perceived. Throughout Europe, the energy used in buildings is about half the total energy consumption so the role of solar energy in buildings is likely to remain a central issue. The interest in passive solar buildings, which store the solar energy within the fabric, is likely to strongly increase, possibly at the expense of active solar systems. This is intended to place the emphasis on the importance of methodologies of design. Equipment will need to be made reliable to meet the market needs. Considerable progress has already been made in the development of the EEC Standards for active solar collection systems. However, increasing use is likely to be made of computer simulation studies to predict the performance of such complex systems in advance of construction and to analyze the complex results of actual field trials.
