Abstract

As the application of reverse osmosis systems for brackish water desalination and wastewater reuse continues to rise, there is an increasing need to address the treatment of reverse osmosis concentrated brine. The solar membrane distillation technology leverages solar energy to effectively distill reverse osmosis concentrated brine with low energy consumption, pollution-free operation, and ease of use. This review reports comprehensive advancements in solar membrane distillation technology for the treatment of reverse osmosis concentrated brine. It begins by introducing the technology for treating reverse osmosis concentrated brine, different types of membrane distillation and their performance differences. The focus then shifts to the selection and optimization of distillation membrane materials, types, and enhancement of membrane structures, as well as the control of membrane contamination. It also explores solar collector systems, treatment mechanisms, influencing factors, and challenges of this process. In the future, membrane contamination, system performance optimization and enhancement need to be further explored to provide robust technical support for its broader practical application.
