Abstract

This review summarizes recent advances in solar advanced oxidation processes for degrading pesticides under different reaction mechanisms, electrode material, and sunlight. The performance of the solar treatments, which are highly dependent on the solar irradiation and the photocatalysts used in the process, are also mentioned. The fast generation and use of photons increase the emerging pollutants degradation/mineralization rate, then, solar technologies seem to be excellent processes for wastewater reclamation in near future. This review also presents the worldwide occurrence of pesticides and their removal from distinct water matrices summarizing optimal operating parameters and degradation efficiencies. Finally, outlooks and perspectives are provided. • Pesticides removal through solar (electrochemical) advanced oxidation processes. • Fundamental of solar advanced oxidation process. • The occurrence of pesticides around the world. • Outlooks for future research are suggested.
