Abstract

Solar daily variations in meson intensity were recorded at Hobart, Tasmania ( lambda = 52 deg S), and at Mawson, Antarctica ( lambda = 73 deg S). A comparison was made of the phase of the daily and long-term variations recorded by vertical telescopes. A comparison was also made of the daily variations recorded simultaneously at Mawson by telescopes directed vertically, 45 deg N, 45 deg E, 45 deg S. and 45'W of the zenith. respectively. The results of the study are not consistent with an explanation of the daily variation in terms of an external anisotropy and its interaction with a "normal'' dipole field. It is suggested that the daily variations probably arise from some modulation mechanism operating within the region occupied by the earth's fleld. (A.C.)
