Abstract

Soil-structure interaction (SSI) has been reviewed in light of ground motion and structural response data accumulated to date. Correlations of observations with site response and SSI analyses are presented. The SSI analysis process is discussed according to the component elements: specification of the free-field ground motion, models of soil and structures, SSI analysis, and interpretation of responses. Observed data and correlative analyses help clarify the important issues involved in a SSI analysis, the quality of the assumptions made in modem practice, and their impact on structure response.
