Abstract
Abstract The authors present an overview of the soils and tundra vegetation occurring on the floodplain of the Amguema River in Eastern Chukotka, distinguishing between lower, middle, higher, and old floodplain zones. In each case the dynamics of the soils, vegetation, and permafrost are discussed, with an emphasis on plant succession and the response to relative degrees of periodic flooding. The article closes with a brief discussion of changes in soil and vegetation (on the parts of the floodplain not inundated) that will result from the construction of a proposed hydroelectric dam.
