Abstract
Soil survey services have shown only little interest in investigations of urban sites up to now. This has started to change over the last five years. In the Federal Republic of Germany soil maps of the cities Berlin, Eckernforde, Hamburg, Hannover and Kiel have been published or are under study. Further cities are planning soil survey projects. For providing urban soil survey projects with basic information and instructions, the working group “Urban Soils” of the German Soil Science Society developed a first draft of an urban soil survey instruction (Arbeitskreis Stadtboboden, 1989).
