Abstract

Forensic soil science is the application of soil science in the context of the law. Soil materials can be used in forensic investigations to evaluate potential associations to support law enforcement agencies in investigating criminal, environmental, and serious and organized crime. Soil recovered from a questioned item, with an unknown history can be compared with known locations such as crime scenes and alibi locations. Forensic soil science is used to assist in search operations where soil can help narrow down areas to focus the ground search activities (provenancing) and as trace comparison and evidence in court. Established concepts, standardized approaches and professionalism have been developed in soil science and should be carefully applied regarding the legal context to allow the appropriate and safe application of soil science within the criminal justice systems worldwide.
