Abstract

ABSTRACT TIME domain reflectometry (TDR) measurement of soil moisture in sandy-gravelly soils is examined. It is found that the empirical TDR-soil moisture relationship derived by Topp et al. (1980) is valid for these coarse textures. Two soils, sand and sandy loam, were studied at moisture contents ranging from air dry to saturation and with varying gravel contents up to 50%. The TDR measurements compare well with the results of previous investigations. The TDR soil moisture was also slightly more accurate than concurrent neutron surface meter measurements. TDR is an effective means of determining soil moisture in sandy-gravelly soils.
