Abstract

Soil Maps are complex records of georeferenced information. The maps are interpreted for a wide variety of decision-making tasks by users, many of whom have difficulty with current soil map designs. The use of cartographic communication models ensures that the map producer is sensitive to the needs of map users. Results of an experiment on the design of map legends reveal the influence of such design on ease and accuracy of use. For maps in the scale range 1:100,00 to 1:200,000 a Closed legend design proved superior to Open, Uncontrolled and Controlled legend designs. Closed legend design can contain the “complete” information expected and have it accessible in the most efficient way.
