Abstract

Trial soil improvement by gravel compaction piles and dynamic consolidation, and a subsequent full-scale loading test on loose volcanic ash soil were conducted prior to the design of large tank foundations. The effects of soil improvement were evaluated with respect to the increase in cone resistance of a cone penetration test and the measured settlements. Simple procedures to predict settlements of improved soil were evaluated on the basis of the load test results. Full loading tests of tanks after completion of construction showed that the predictions by this procedure were in good agreement with the measured settlements.
