Abstract
The Borealis Mine is a bulk-minable disseminated gold-silver deposit located in Mineral County, Nevada (lat. 118°45′W, lon. 38°23′N). In 1979, Houston International Minerals Corporation discovered this deposit containing 1.4 million metric tons of ore with average grade of 3.4 ppm gold and 16 ppm silver. The main ore hosts are Tertiary volcanic rocks of andesitic and rhyolitic composition. The area receives an anual precipitation of about 45 cm (Houghton et al., 1975), and it is mainly a woodland of pinyon pines ( Pinus monophylla) and Utah junipers ( Juniperus osteosperma). The ground cover is predominantly low sagebrush ( Artemisia arbuscula). The Borealis Mine is located about 2100 m above sea level, and the topography in the vicinity is generally quite gentle. The slopes are commonly less than 15 degrees.
