Abstract

Abstract A mathematical model for the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wet gas streams by granular activated carbon columns is developed, and modeling results are discussed. Capillary condensation of water in the carbon pores is found to have a very damaging effect on the rate of VOC adsorption, since diffusion rates of VOCs into the pores are greatly reduced. Implications of the results for the operation of soil vapor extraction systems for the remediation of hazardous waste sites are discussed, and suggestions are made on how to deal with the problem.
