Abstract

Abstract The environmental and pollution problems associated with pig farming in Scotland are discussed prior to an examination of the soil and site conditions affecting pollution‐free disposal of slurry. Rather than classify and map the suitability of land to accept slurry, guidelines based on information on climate, in particular the MORECS data, and soil distribution and characteristics, as derived from soil maps, are presented with reference to suitable timings to apply slurry and to storage‐duration requirements. These guidelines emphasize the need to use data on a real‐time basis and to utilize the conditions at a particular site to plan slurry‐disposal techniques suitable for that site.
