Abstract
The steps being taken by Taiwan to shift its focus from manufacturing to information industries are described. To develop manpower, a five-year computer training program called the Software Engineering Institute, to cultivate local software personnel, and the Marketing Information Center have been set up. The government has sponsored four national programs, including the Financial Information System, the Taiwan Meteorological System, the Residential Registration System, and the Patient Care System, that reflect a commitment to the effective use of large-scale computer systems. A number of products have been developed, and a four-year project is underway to develop more. International initiatives and a project to provide local industry a distributed software-development environment are also discussed. Other research is summarized. >
