Abstract

Software quality metrics are numerical measures that are used to quantify some aspect of a software product. The paper, which forms an introduction to the remaining metrics papers in this issue, is part tutorial and part review. It outlines the nature of such metrics, places them in historical context, and describes how they might be used. The paper finishes with a description of an example of how metrics can be employed on a software project.
