Abstract

A survey is presented on applications which have appeared in the open literature since 1970 of linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control theory to the control of real chemical or physical processes in industry. The shortcomings of the LQG approach are discussed together with recent advances in LQG theory and its implementation which justify renewed interest in its application to process control. Competing process control strategies are also considered and compared with LQG control.
