Abstract

<i>The digital transformation for media production has been set in motion by the transition from serial digital interface (SDI) to Internet Protocol (IP). Given the digital shift in consumption, how is media production adapting? More media channels must be served with more differentiated content. How does a public broadcaster with limited budget deal with these changes? With these constraints, sometimes the most innovative, yet simple solutions emerge. Delaying the new broadcast building highlighted an impending problem; the current infrastructure is wearing out. The issue of how to bridge the next five years was turned into a learning opportunity for both the technology and the operations departments. To achieve a new level of operational efficiency, software-based production seems to be the direction to take to create a production environment that is flexible, scalable, and shareable for both recurring and one-off productions at Vlaamse Radio en Televisie (VRT)</i>.
