Abstract

The structural phase transition of CeCu 6 has been studied by neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the splitting angle of the Bragg point (0 2 0) corresponding to the distortion angle from the orthorhombic structure reveals that this transition is nearly of second order. The soft phonons associated with the structural phase transition were observed in the orthorhombic phase. The observed neutron groups with this phonon mode are extremely narrow even near the transition temperature.
