Abstract

Sound velocity measurements in strong magnetic fields can be used to obtain information about the shape of the electronic density of states in systems where it is strongly peaked in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. This is shown by comparing the observed soft mode stiffening of V3Si in high fields with theoretical results based on different models for the density of states. Other materials expected to show similar effects, are proposed.
