Abstract

At a phase transition in an electronic system the appropriate zero frequency response function must diverge. This can occur either through the movement of a finite frequency peak to zero frequency (soft mode) or the divergence of a relaxation type response (central peak). Examples of these types of behaviour in systems with crystal field splitting are discussed. When the coupling to the phonons is important (Jahn-Teller effect), the mixing of the electronic and vibrational modes is significant. This can have a dramatic effect on the elastic constants near a phase transition, and examples of this effect are also discussed.
