Abstract

A method for soft decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codes using the Fano sequential algorithm is presented. This method provides better error performance than hard decision decoding, but uses less memory than stack-based soft decision algorithms and requires fewer decodings than other soft decision methods. Results are given that compare the performance of this method both to hard decision decoding methods and to other soft decision methods.
