Abstract

Sodium nitrite is a strong oxidising agent with multiple industrial uses. Ingestion of a small dose can cause death rapidly through the formation of methaemoglobin and nitric oxide. Globally, while deaths due to sodium nitrite ingestion have been sporadic and tended to be accidental, the frequency of deaths due to purposeful ingestions is increasing. Local incidences of sodium nitrite ingestion in Singapore remain rare. We present a case report of a death due to sodium nitrite ingestion in Singapore, the challenges faced, and the various diagnostic approaches to sodium nitrite toxicity.
