Abstract

Acute-loading of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been shown to improve 200-m swimming performance in highly trained male swimmers. However, acute-loading of NaHCO3 is associated with detrimental side effects such as stomach upset, elevated urinary pH and poor performance during events performed on subsequent days. NaHCO3 loading over multiple days (chronic-loading) is thought to reduce stomach upset, maintain urinary pH and sustain improved swimming performance on the following day.
