Abstract

IT has long been known that tissues exposed to low temperatures in vitro lose potassium while on the other hand there are few published reports regarding sodium exchange during the same conditions1,2. In a previous report3 we have demonstrated that the potassium/sodium ratio in the muscles of fishes caught in cold arctic waters is low when compared with fishes from boreal waters. The very same variations with temperature were found to take place in specimens of the same species both in Nature (Gadus) and in the laboratory (Cottus).
