Abstract

The heterogeneous phase system (NBA)/borate glass, NiO, FeO/FeNi that represents a potential sodium reference electrode has been thermodynamically characterized in the temperature interval 400-600°C by potentiometric measurements on the following solid electrolyte galvanic cell: Au, glass, NiO, FeO|FeNi|Au. The sodium activity of the system amounts to The experimental findings indicate that the borate glass not only plays the role of an inert solvent for the remaining phases but reacts itself with thus adopting a certain sodium oxide content which in equilibrium with the metal and the metal oxide establishes the sodium potential of the system. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society.
