Abstract

Twenty-nine cases (Grade I:6, II:10, III:13) of socket reconstruction by very thin mucosal flaps from the lips are reported. In the majority fibrous contraction seems to be a slowly progressing process and may take place even after surgical rehabilitation.Among the early recontractions we found three patients with congenital anoph-thalmos, two burns, one after a severe car accident and two with orbital and lid damage from war injuries. On the whole, only 50% of our patients were able to wear large- or medium-sized artificial eyes during the follow-up. In severe socket contraction (Grade III) our method was not efficient enough. Long-term results of other techniques are of general interest.
