Abstract
Law and society in Welsh medieval literature. There is more than one way of reading the collection of tales improperly called Mabinogion by Lady Charlotte Guest whose complete English translation of the Red Book of Hergest and of the White Book of Rhydderch was published between 1838 and 1849. In his article the author deals with only two aspects : he shows how some passages, which otherwise would remain misunderstood, can be interpreted in the light of Cyfraith Hywel (the usual designation for Welsh texts and Latin translations of the Welsh Law). Conversely, he shows how these stories illustrate the law texts and confirm their stipulations. Examples are taken only from the Four Branches.
