Abstract

Team based cellular manufacturing combines the technical 'product' based grouping of equipment with the development of self-managing work teams. This paper outlines a new 'frontiers of autonomy' model for describing the alternative forms of teamwork and guiding the choice between them. The model adopts a multidimensional view of the tasks performed by teams. In analysing the influences on the form taken by teams, the model develops on views of the workplace as a political struggle over 'frontiers of control'.
