Abstract

The oral myths reaching the writer's ears during the last twentythree years deal predominantly with the problems and adventures of supernatural individuals, and the groups attending them are unimportant accessories, mere stage effects. Influential written scriptures of India are dominated by the doctrine of the unreality of the world and society, and by a longing to escape from both. Beginning optimistically with the RigVeda, the scriptures deviated into profound pessimism as regards the human lot, turning men's minds first to ritualistic and then to metaphysical escapes, rendering positive interest in society inconceivable.
