Abstract

Abstract Sociology of education in America has a long tradition. At the turn of the century educational sociology was founded amid great expectations, but it contained little high‐level research. Utopia turned to tragedy, which ended with the return of educationalists and sociologists to their own respective disciplines. Contemporary research into the sociology of education is divided into mainstream (functionalism) and radical‐‐critical, in the European sense‐‐theories. The strong suit of the former is its use of the empirical method whereas the latter strives to construct a serious theory. In this article the initial results of a thematic interview of 10 researchers are reported. They discuss the concept of their professional identity, assessments of the state of and challenges facing sociology of education and their views of American society and the changes occurring in education.
