Abstract

In this chapter, Gerald Grace’s contribution to sociology and Catholic education are subjected to a critical analysis by a leading sociologist of education. This is done through the author centring on one piece of Grace’s, a chapter entitled ‘The Field of Catholic Education: Perspectives from Bourdieu and Bernstein’ (Grace, 2002). In drawing on one piece from his vast set of publications, the intention is to foreground Gerald Grace’s commitment to ‘judgements of proper work in social science’. Grace has been able to draw out how insights from Bernstein and Bourdieu can be applied to Catholic Education Studies, and this is at the heart of his contribution.
