Abstract

This contribution focuses on the speech communities in the Catalan-speaking areas of Aragon. It reports on a survey study based on 40 questions and carried out in a stratified, proportional random sample. The sociolinguistic status of the language varieties concerned is described, as well as the attitudes of the informants according to their age, sex and level of education. As a result, castilianisation of vernacular speech is found among young speakers; but at the same time, standard Catalan exerts an increasing influence on the local varieties, above all through the mass media
